How to Get Involved

Who is a Survivorship Peer?

A Survivorship Peer is someone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer and is interested in giving back and supporting other women and men who are currently going through treatment. Being the supportive face and voice of a cancer survivor can be as rewarding for peers as it can be reassuring for those going through treatment.

Are you a breast cancer survivor with an interest in ‘giving back’ after everything you have experienced? The Survivorship Program needs you! As a Survivorship Peer you will play an important role by talking with new survivors in the Breast Centre and supporting them through their treatment journey. You have “been there” and your experiences help make you a good listener, supporter, and educator.

You will have training from the Breast Cancer Survivorship Program and ongoing supervision by licensed professionals. The strategies and skills you learn will help you feel comfortable in this role. You will learn how to recognize personal boundaries while still providing effective support to new survivors and their families in a manner that shows respect, compassion and empathy.
